Alberta's Joal Kamps is an award-winning singer-songwriter (International Songwriting Competition, Western Canadian Music Award, Independent Music Award), international touring musician (USA, NLD, DEU, FRA, GBR, CAN), and showcasing artist (Canadian Music Week, Breakout West). With four commercial releases to his name including two full-length albums (Sojourner & Heads Is East Tails Is West) and two extended play recordings (Waiting & The RED E.P.), Kamps has been independently writing, recording, and releasing original music for over a decade.

Currently performing as a self-taught solo artist, instrumental guitarist, and co-member of Albertan folk/roots duo Flint & Feather, Joal and his wife Lauren were official showcase artists at the Southeast Regional Folk Alliance (SERFA) Conference in Chattanooga, TN, USA and for the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) in Saskatoon, SK. The Kamps’ are also privileged alumni of Canada Music Incubator’s ‘Artist Entrepreneur' program, The Banff Centre’s ‘Musicians in Residence’ program, and The Hornby School for Emerging Artists.

The majority of Joal’s original music is rooted in the singer-songwriter genre and folk/roots music traditions and is often inspired by Rocky Mountain folklore and Western Canadian history. His material has been released under his own artist name and has been picked up or released by fellow performing and recording artists in the Canadian Country Music Industry including Manitoba Country Music Award-winner Kendra Kay. Kamps has also been privileged to perform his songs live on CTV National's 'Canada AM' and a host of other television stations in North America and Western Europe.

Joal was extremely honoured to become Canada's first ever Provincial 'Artist in Residence & Arts Ambassador' for the Province of Alberta in 2020-2021. In this role he strongly advocated the value of the arts in Alberta through composing a multidisciplinary performance piece entitled 'Wild Rose' which debuted at the Polaris Theatre (formerly the Polaris Centre for the Performing Arts) during Alberta Culture Days. This showcase presentation incorporated performances by Alberta-based musicians Lauren Kamps, Lisa Jacobs, and Jason Hofer; dancers Janita Frantsi and Kathleen Hughes; and featured a commissioned artwork by visual artist Bryony Toon.

In addition to his work as a performing and recording artist, Joal is also an active member of ACTRA and has been as an arts consultant or official juror for the Prophets of Music Society, Calgary Arts Development Authority, and FACTOR Canada, as well as the YYC Music Awards, Canadian Folk Music Awards, and Western Canadian Music Awards. Joal has also enjoyed being an instructor for the Foothills Acoustic Music Institute (FAMI) and has presented individual classes or workshops on music business, songwriting, and more at public and private schools throughout Western Canada.

Kamps continues to create new songs as a full-time performing and recording artist in Flint & Feather, and has co-produced multiple recordings in this capacity. He has enjoyed working directly with JUNO Award-winning producers Colin Linden and Russell Broom, as well as Jason Hofer, Paul Zacharias, Mark Troyer, and Bruce Hildesheim. Joal is currently producing Flint & Feather’s debut album and their first two singles 'The Very Thing I Fear' and 'We Belong Together' are available now on streaming platforms worldwide.
